Carlisle-born Steve Borthwick says England are "desperate to get better" - as they look to make history this weekend.

England will face Ireland tomorrow (5pm kick-off) in their final 2017 RBS 6 Nations match, looking to become the first side in the current era of the tournament to defend the Grand Slam.

Only five teams have managed the feat in the history of the competition but none have achieved it since it took on the current six-team format back in 2000.

Eddie Jones' team will also be seeking a record-breaking 19th successive Test victory when they come up against Ireland, with the 6 Nations Trophy already secured last weekend after a 61-21 win over Scotland.

Cumbrian Borthwick, England's forwards coach, said: "This squad keeps looking ahead and the players thrive on the next challenge.

"This is our next challenge and the players are desperate to get better."

He added: "This is the next challenge and the next opportunity to show that we're improving.

"Ireland are a very good side and have a forward pack who have experience and are able to show what quality and pace they have. Their half-backs are good, so they're a good side."

And England winger Elliot Daly could retain his place in the team after being substituted early on during the victory over Scotland last Saturday.

"Elliot is progressing really well through the return-to-play protocols," said Borthwick. "He's gone through every stage really well so far."

London Wasps' Daly was involved in a contact session with England on Wednesday and was expected back in training yesterday.
