Barnsley will tonight be without their matchwinner from their last encounter with Carlisle United.

Herbie Kane, whose late penalty sealed a 2-1 win for the Tykes against the Blues in January, starts a two-game suspension.

The midfielder received his tenth booking of the season in Saturday's 5-1 home defeat to Lincoln City.

The 25-year-old has been a key man for Neill Collins' promotion-chasers with nine goals in 38 appearances this campaign.

Collins, speaking to the Barnsley Chronicle, admits they will feel the loss of Kane at Brunton Park.

“He will be a big miss," he said.

"He’s been fantastic. [But] it’s an opportunity for someone else.” United's Jon Mellish will face a similar ban if he's booked tonight, but the risk of a suspension for ten bookings will be avoided if he is not yellow-carded this evening, with the cut-off for such bans the 37-game mark.

It was a first loss in eight games for a side who sit five points outside the top two, and seven points above the chasing pack outside the play-off places.

"There's a balance to be had - we can't over-analyse certain aspects. Some players who've been fantastic were well below-par [against Lincoln]," Collins told the BBC.

"We've not had many defeats for a reason but there were trends in there I didn't like.

"But we all need to move on quickly because we've got another big game coming up [at Carlisle].

"We shouldn't have needed a wake-up call, but we've had it and we've got to channel it into Tuesday night.

"If we win on Tuesday night we can get back at it."

Barnsley, whose squad will include ex-Carlisle striker Sam Cosgrove, are unbeaten in their last nine away games in League One, a run going back to November.

They have lost just once on their travels all season in the league, whilst they have won ten and drawn six away from home.

This is their first trip to Brunton Park since September 1985 - a 1-1 draw in the old Division Two - with Carlisle's last home win against the Tykes coming in March that year with a 2-0 win.

Barnsley's last win at United's ground was as far back as December 1954, when the Yorkshire side won 4-2 in Division Three North. The Blues are unbeaten in eight home meetings since then.
