Carlisle United fans are being invited to join in a poignant tribute to David Wilkes next week.

The two clubs where Wilkes made his playing and coaching name meet next Tuesday when Barnsley host the Blues at Oakwell.

And the much-missed United youth coach, who died last year, will be remembered with a minute's applause in the 59th minute of the League One game.

Wilkes was 59 when he passed away last June.

Barnsley confirmed that the tribute - which was originally planned for November's game, which was postponed - will take place in the rearranged fixture on Tuesday, January 16.

"Last summer, we lost Dave Wilkes. One of our own, and a man also connected to Carlisle United for much of his career," said the Tykes.

"At the request of his family, we invite fans of both clubs to join in a round of applause in the 59th minute of our clash on Tuesday 16th of January."

Wilkes started his career at Barnsley as a promising young player who made the first-team grade.

After injury dashed his hopes of a long playing career, he moved into coaching and went on to have a long and hugely admired spell with the Blues.

Wilkes was instrumental in the youth set-up that produced a host of brilliant young players at Brunton Park in the 1990s.

After a short spell away from the club from 1999 to 2005, he returned and was part of United's academy ever since, latterly in the role of head of academy coaching.

Wilkes' contribution to Carlisle now features on a flag created by supporters, featuring the phrase 'Part of the fabric of the club'.

Next Tuesday's game in Yorkshire will be the first league meeting between Barnsley and Carlisle since 1986.
