It was a good night for Carlisle United's play-off chances - but their automatic hopes suffered a blow.

Two of the Blues' rivals played games in hand on Tuesday night.

Third-placed Stevenage took a major step closer to automatic promotion with a 1-0 win at Swindon Town.

But play-off chasing Mansfield Town lost 2-1 at home to Leyton Orient.

Stevenage's win means they are now four points clear of United and Stockport County with two games to go.

Steve Evans' side can now clinch promotion if they beat Grimsby Town at home on Saturday.

If they falter there, a win in Cumbria on the final day - at Barrow - would be enough.

Jamie Reid hit the only goal for Stevenage at the County Ground, sending them a point behind second-placed Northampton Town.

In the play-off race, meanwhile, Mansfield missed out on the change to go level on points with fifth-placed Carlisle and fourth-placed Stockport.

Nigel Clough's eighth-placed Stags took an early lead through Davis Keillor-Dunn, but were soon overhauled by the champions who struck through Charlie Kelman and Ruel Sotiriou.

Orient had Shadrach Ogie sent off in the second half but held on for victory at the One Call Stadium.

Mansfield's defeat leaves them three points behind Carlisle with two games to play, and an inferior goal difference.

United will clinch at least a play-off place if they beat Salford City on Saturday.
