WE shared the news that traffic lights and road closures continue to be in place across Carlisle as progress continues on the Carlisle Southern Link Road.

Wreay Road and Peter Lane were closed for the week and traffic lights are in place on Newbiggin Road, the Brisco Crossroads with some arriving on Dalston Road on April 20.

Peter Lane was closed on several occasions during the large-scale works to facilitate drainage works associated with the new road whilst there will be no access to Newbiggin Road from Wreay Road during this period to enable works associated with the new Brisco roundabout.

Work began on this major infrastructure project in June 2023 after more than £200 million of investment from both local and national government.

Keziah Rawlinson said: "What worries me more than how long the road development takes is how many new houses are being built without infrastructure for schools, GPs, dentists and hospitals."

Barney Woodward said: "Should concentrate on the roads we’ve got before building more."

Peter Mark replied and said: "Carlisle should have had a ring road long ago, this is overdue to take the pressure off the London road from the motorway to get to the South West end."

Mike Fell commented that the closure of roads near Dalston could impact GCSE's and A Level exams, which are due to start in May.

"The closure of Peter Lane permanently will also create a rat run for residents of the Amberwood development, I used to live there and moved partly because of this," he added.
