It was one of the highest profile victims of the Carlisle floods.

But as businesses and families continue to move back in or move on with life after the disaster of December 2015, the doors are still shut at Ristorante Adriano.

The case of this popular destination venue demonstrates the frustrations still felt by a number of homes and firms - nearly 20 months on from Storm Desmond.

Problems with the refitting at the restaurant means that an opening date has been delayed again.

The building itself is owned by Carlisle City Council, which is offering the restaurant boss Franco Bertoletti compensation.

He says that he does not know when the restaurant will open again.

“I’ve been out for 20 months now,” he told The Cumberland News.

“There’s been problems with the kitchen. The date keeps getting put back.

"It was meant to be August [2016], then it was put back.

"Then it was meant to be April [this year] and it was put back again.

"Then it was meant to be July but that hasn’t happened.”

He added: “I’m speaking to the council and they’ve done what they can.

“It is frustrating. It affects my income and my staff, it means that we are losing business.”

Darren Crossley, deputy chief executive at the council, said that the authority was continuing to work with contractors to address the issues.

“Essentially there’s problems with the kitchen that need sorting,” he said.

“But as landlords it’s our obligation to make sure that everything is as it should be before the restaurant reopens.”

Mr Crossley said that while he could not disclose the compensation, it is something that councillors would be made aware of.

“We’ll be open and transparent about it,” he said.

“We’ll make councillors aware of our intentions. The money is essentially a one-off to compensate for loss of income.”
