They're one of the staples of 21st century fashion and the elite clothing world of the last century, regularly seen sashaying down an international catwalk.

And now products made by Linton Tweeds - renowned as the original Chanel fabric makers - are on sale in Carlisle's Tourist Information Centre.

Linton Tweeds, based in Shaddongate, Carlisle, designs and weaves fabric for the likes of other fashion houses including Burberry.

It's all part of a move to make the centre's gift shop more upmarket - and give visitors a taste of the more glamorous side of Carlisle.

Jo Mills, tourist information officer, said: "We're really excited about stocking these products as its a completely new venture for us.

"We've got a new range of Linton Tweeds accessories including purses, notebooks and a couple of scarves in an assortment of tweeds."

The centre, at the Old Town Hall, also stocks a range of locally made jewellery by a company called Something Precious.

Jo said: "We have a range of ceramics and jewellery too and we're always looking to add to our collection of locally made items.

"We are trying to grow that side of our gifts.

"We look for good quality items.

"We want to make the gift shop a nice place for local people to shop as well as visitors."

The Cumbrian goods on sale also include offerings from the county's culinary scene.

The shop sells beer made by the Carlisle Brewing Company and a gift set of gin, vodka and whisky from The Lakes Distillery at Setmurthy, near Bassenthwaite Lake.

"One of our most popular items is the Kendal Mint Cake liqueur. That does really well," said Jo.

The shop still sells a range of locally-themed key rings, magnets and postcards.

Jo said: "We still sell these souvenir items but we want to expand the gift side.

"This is the perfect time to do it as Carlisle is busy for the Easter holidays."

Jo touched on an influx of visitors since repairs were carried out on one of the country's most iconic rail lines, which had been hit by a landslide.

"Things have really picked up since the Settle to Carlisle line fully reopened," she added.

"There's a real positive vibe in the city."
