A bare-knuckle boxer from Carlisle is to feature in a reality show revealing the build-up to a big fight night.

Derek Heggie, 31, is one of the stars of a documentary titled Unorthodox, which tells the tale of six fighters as they train for an onstage showdown in London next year.

Derek, known as Decca, also goes by the fighting name “The Machine” – but he’s a hard man with a big heart, according to one of the main characters in the show.

Boxing promoter Nina Cranstoun said: “I think the public class bare-knuckle fighters as hard, brutal men and don’t get me wrong, they’re a different class of fighter.

“But they’re all human with lives to lead. Decca’s life is one of hunger and determination to do better. To never give up bettering yourself day-to-day.

“Decca has a big heart and a lot to offer but he also has a wild fighting spirit.”

Decca was born and brought up in Harraby but has been training round the country to gain experience.

“I am really excited to be a part of the show and I think I have a lot to offer,” he added.

“I am totally humbled that this lad from Carlisle has had this opportunity. I never dreamed this would happen.

“All I know is I like to fight. But apart from that I’m like every other man.

“I like my football and soaps and reality TV so to think I am now going to be on one is mind blowing.”

The show will feature on YouTube from December 1 under the name Unorthodox.
