A walk to honour fallen war heroes is set to take place to launch this year's Poppy Appeal in Brampton.

About 10 members of Brampton's Royal British Legion will be marching almost 13 miles from Carlisle Castle to Newtown, near Brampton, for the organisation's fourth Honour Walk on Saturday, October 24.

Chairman Brian Pease started it as a way of launching the local Poppy Appeal for the first time in 2012.

This year walkers will make their way from the castle, via the Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle Airport to Newtown, laying crosses in locations either where servicemen and women have served, or where there are memorials.

"The main objective of that is to highlight the occasion," said Mr Pease.

"We do collect money but that's not the main objective. We're all sponsored. But it is the launch of Poppy Day and what it means to everybody."

Last year's appeal in Brampton raised about £12,000.

Each year they go to different places of significance to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Walks in previous years have included churches, war memorials and a crash site at Coldfell, in the North Pennines.
