A Carlisle woman whose daughter suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS) is urging people to support her charity masquerade ball and help her raise vital funds.

Karen Conley, 44, from the Belah area, has been inspired to organise the event in support of her daughter Zoe, who was diagnosed with the disease at the age of just 21.

Money raised from her ball at the city's Milton Hotel, off London Road, will be split between the MS Society and Parkinson's UK as her brother-in-law David currently lives with Parkinson's.

Karen said: "Both Zoe and David have shown amazing courage dealing with their conditions.

"Zoe is a loving mother to her three young children, and whilst she’s had to give up work due to her MS, she faces each day with a smile and determination that inspires everyone she meets.

"My brother-in-law David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s just before his 40th birthday in 2005, and I have watched him battle to regain control after the condition forced him to take early retirement from his role as a firefighter.

"Watching Zoe and David face their futures with such courage has inspired me to do something to raise awareness and money for these two life-changing conditions, and we came up with the idea of holding a ball in aid of the MS Society and Parkinson’s UK.

"All the money raised will support people living with the conditions in Cumbria.”

Suzanne McKenna, regional fundraiser at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Karen and her family are truly inspirational in both their positive attitude and commitment to support other people with Parkinson’s and MS, and we are truly grateful."

The masquerade ball takes place on Saturday, 26 August from 7pm.

Tickets are £20 and include live music, a buffet and raffle. Tickets can be bought by contacting Karen on karenconl@aol.com, or on the door on the night.
