Community groups in Wigton are urging people to vote for them this weekend as a competition - where they can win vital cash for projects - draws to a close.

Watchtree Wheelers and Wigton Baths want people to back them in the Community Choices contest.

They have been shortlisted in the Improving Health and Wellbeing category. It is possible for both projects to win cash.

Ryan Dobson, access and recreation officer for Watchtree Nature Reserve, said: "This is our last final push for votes after a month of campaigning so we are urging people to get voting before Sunday."

Watchtree Wheelers wants the cash to upgrade some of its cycle tracks.

Mr Dobson said: "We want to upgrade about one mile of cycle track which is a gravel trail at the moment.

"We have to do a lot of repairs to the potholes on it at the moment.

"People with disabilities use the special bikes on the track and the Ready Steady Mums group push their buggies on it. People in wheelchairs also use it to go round the nature reserve.

"If the weather has been bad then the track tends to get ignored because it isn't of the highest standard and so we want to make it better.

"We would very much like the money from the competition.

"We are friends with Wigton Baths and it would be great if the cash could help improve both projects in the town."

Wigton Baths would use the money to install a new shower system.

Mave Tyas, deputy chair of trustees at Wigton Baths, said: "If we had new showers it would make such a difference.

"Footfall has risen significantly since we took over the baths and our customers tell us that the baths are great - but not the showers. There's not enough of them. We would install 11 new shower heads.

"We would also move the hot water tank into the boiler house where it won't get flooded. It would be really good if we got the money to do this."

People can vote 10 times and can support both projects if they wish to do so by giving each project five votes each.

Launched by Sellafield Ltd, with support from the CN Group – publishers of The Cumberland News – CFM, Cumbria Community Foundation and Phoenix Enterprise Centre, the scheme is aimed at giving a financial boost to not-for-profit organisations.

Newton Arlosh Community Committee has been shortlisted in the separate Supporting Stronger Communities category.

It is planning to set up a first responders group.

People have until March 26 to cast their votes for the different projects. You can vote 10 times. To vote go to http://decidingtogether.org/
