A Cumbrian Viking settlement has announced the return of its popular ancient cooking experience.

The ancient cooking experience is set to take place at Wigton's Moorforge Viking Settlement in August.

The event will be hosted by Craig Brookes, or the 'Saxon Forager' as he is also known, who is based in Wiltshire but found his passion for Viking cookery at the Moorforge settlement.

In recent weeks Craig hosted an Easter cookery experience which proved to be extremely popular and after his return over the Summer was announced he was on hand to explain what the event will entail.

He said: "The one that I am going to do next is where I started off, I started teaching at Moorforge itself and it will give people an overview of Viking food.

"Generally speaking we try to cover some of the basic foods such as butter and cheese making and we make flatbreads, light fires, and then in the afternoon we do things like make sausages by hand and make a main meal.

"We get a big mix of people from reenactors to people that just want to learn how to cook over an open fire, I think the interest has gone up in the last few years."

Ash Harrison is one of the members of the Moorforge Viking Settlement and expressed his own excitement at being able to welcome Craig back over the summer after a successful Easter visit.

He said: "It's really hands-on and everyone stays on the site and they will cook outside or in the long house and it is a fantastic experience for people of all ages.

"It gives people a flavour of what they would have been eating in the Saxon and Viking age.
