A Brampton secondary school's football team has claimed their third consecutive County Cup.

William Howard School's Year 10 football team took on Carlisle's Trinity School in the County Cup final on Tuesday, April 23.

The match was tightly contested with the Brampton school's opener in the first half being cancelled out in the second by their opponents, with the game eventually being forced into extra time and penalties which William Howard won 5-4.

William Howard School's Year 10's captain and goalkeeper Shaun Petry played a vital part in the victory, repelling several Trinity School efforts in the second half, and was on hand to express his delight at winning his third consecutive championship.

He said: "I’m really proud of the team’s achievement. We’ve been playing together since Year Seven so are a very tight-knit group."

"This is the third time we’ve won the County Cup, winning in Year Eight and Nine too."

"It was a tough match. We just had to stick to the task and listen to the coach.

"It’s a shame it went to penalties, it meant there was a lot of pressure on those taking the penalties as well as me as a goalkeeper."

The team's coach Reece Davies also reflected on the team's 'excellent' season and explained how the close-knit nature of the group has helped them 'dominate' their year group.

"The team have had an excellent season.

"They reached the final 16 in the national competition out of around 300 teams.

"In recent years, they have dominated their year group.

"The boys are all high-end performers and a really close group.

"They respond well to any information given, but if they feel they’re not playing up to standard, they’re very good at correcting themselves and improving their game. Hopefully, they’ll continue their success."
