A recently acquired village inn has ascended into the top 10 restaurants in the Carlisle area on TripAdvisor, with plenty of rave reviews coming its way for its delicious grub and friendly atmosphere.

With an impressive 462 'excellent' five-star ratings, The Sally, Irthington, has taken eighth place on the renowned review platform.

Tom Towle, who took over running the business last October, said: "We're really happy.

"It's nice to get in the top 10. When you open Tripadvisor, we're on that first page, that's important to get people to hear about us.

"It's exceeded my expectations, you never how it'll go when buying it and welcoming people back in," he said.

Initially a Victorian Coaching Inn built in 1895, it has since transformed into a welcoming family pub with rooms, attracting both locals and tourists.

Its ever-changing menu prioritises local produce.

"The reception from all the customers has been fantastic," Tom said.

"The staff has been brilliant, I've landed on my feet with everyone that's come in.

"Everyone is really positive and invested in the business, they're happy at work and that shows to the customers," Tom said.

Looking ahead, the pub is looking to get some sunshine to make full use of its beer garden.

The plaudits on Tripadvisor echo Tom's sentiments.

Denefisher1960 lauded it as 'probably the best meal' they've ever had, describing the food and service as 'first class'.

Joel K wrote: "Lovely place to stay - very clean, modern and with very attentive staff.

"We enjoyed a comfortable stay, a lovely evening meal and tasty breakfast on our stopover during a drive from London to the North East of Scotland.

"Would stay again and recommend to anyone."

SheilaB2020x praised their Sunday lunch offering, bolstered by  "a warm friendly welcome by Tom and the team in a lovely comfortable environment".
