A 'SIGNIFICANT' number of cannabis plants with a street value of £135,000 have been seized following a fire in Carlisle today, April 22.
Police were called to the scene of the fire at a property on London Road by Cumbria Fire and Rescue services at 7.07am.
Fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze, which they have since said they suspect was caused by an 'electrical issue'.
Following the fire, Cumbria Police have now confirmed that "officers carried out searches of the property and seized a significant number of cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of £135,000."
Investigations into the drug seize are being continued by police and anyone with information can contact police on 101.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue service said that two fire engines from Carlisle east and Carlisle west attended the incident just before 7am. The domestic property measured approximately ten metres by ten metres, they added.
Whilst the emergency services carried out their work, people were asked to avoid the area.
During the incident, firefighters used two hose reels, four breathing apparatus and two thermal imaging cameras to bring the fire under control and were in attendance for four hours
London Road and access to London Road from Brook Street were closed. Surrounding roads such as Grey Street to Alexander Street were blocked by police during the fire.
Travel was disrupted during the incident. Stagecoach Cumbria said at the time: "Due a fire on London Road, our services that serve London Road will divert via Warwick Road."
The road was cleared at around 10am.
The police force also confirmed that there were no casualties as a result of the fire.
