IF you are looking for things to do over the Bank Holiday weekend – why not head to Muncaster Castle where you are guaranteed a sizzling time whatever the weather?
The Cumbrian castle’s famous Sausage Festival returns (Saturday, May 4 to Monday, May 6) to celebrate all things sausage.
Sausage makers from across the land will converge on the west Cumbrian castle for the family-friendly battle of the bangers over the Bank Holiday weekend – all looking to be crowned the Sausage Champion 2024.
During daily sausage tasting sessions, visitors get to sample six sausages and then vote for their favourite. On each day of the Bank Holiday weekend there will be a “Best Sausage of the Day” competition with the overall winner of the coveted Champion Sausage title announced on Bank Holiday Monday.
While the festival celebrates the local delicacy of the Cumberland sausage there’s also an international ingredient to this year’s event.
Competitors include Cumbrian Boerewors South African sausage, Crakeside Meats, SGAIA plant based sausage, Melville Tyson, Istanbul Kitchen Turkish sausage and Yardies Jamaican Jerk sausage.
There’s fun for four-legged friends with the Sausage Shaped Dog Competition – sausage dogs (and other breeds) are encouraged to take part in a sausage-themed canine competition.
There’s the Bangers & Dash obstacle race activity for all ages and a whole host of activities for children, decorations, music and entertainment all focused on the world of sausages.
Also look out for the new Crafted in Cumbria Craft Fair, which showcases local crafters and provide a fantastic shopping experience for visitors. Food is at the forefront and Taste Cumbria will also be holding a market with tasty treats and desserts.
While enjoying Sausage Fest at Muncaster don’t forget to try out its newest attraction – The Weapons Hall – an indoor training arena where you can try out your medieval knight skills of archery, crossbow, axe-throwing, sword skills and even jousting!
The usual bird of prey flying displays take place over the weekend and when the sausage makers have packed up for the day on Saturday, May 4, there’s the second Dragcaster event for adults – the theme for this year’s drag festival evening is floral decadence.
