THE University of Cumbria has confirmed that performing arts will no longer be delivered at degree level.

In 2022, the university revealed that it would be putting a hold on its performing arts courses due to a reduced demand.

The university welcomed new and returning students for the start of the semester earlier this week, but anyone interested in earning a degree in the performing arts will have unfortunately had to look elsewhere when choosing their next step in education.

A University of Cumbria spokesperson said: “Our Institute of Education, Arts and Society and other academic institutes support our strategic priorities, which include building new areas of expertise relevant to our region, employers, key sectors, and student demand.

"We are also working to enhance our existing provision and research activity. At present, we are focussing on delivering excellent and industry-facing courses in the arts and digital media.

"Performing Arts provision is not currently delivered at degree level, but we are engaging with schools and community settings to engage young people in the arts, including in our specialist teaching in theatre and performance.

"The creative and cultural industries are vital to a healthy and growing local economy, and we are working with colleagues across the arts and education sectors to support participation and education in all art forms."

It has been previously confirmed that the University's new Citadel campus will include a provision for the arts, including a new multi-purpose 200-seater lecture theatre that can be used for community art performances. Plans are still on track to open the new campus by 2026.
