Andrew to switch on Xmas lights

BRITAIN’S Got Talent star Andrew Johnston will switch on Carlisle’s Christmas lights this year.
The chorister, from Stanwix, will flick the switch to light up the city on Sunday, November 16.
Andrew, a former Trinity School pupil, shot to fame when he finished third in the ITV show.
His debut album One Voice reached the top 10 in the charts.
Andrew, 14, said: “I am really pleased to be taking part in my home city’s lights switch-on celebrations. It’ll be great to sing before a Carlisle crowd.
“I had a lot of support from local people when I was taking part in Britain’s Got Talent and the lights switch on will give me a chance to pass on my thanks.”
Final preparations for Carlisle’s Christmas are underway. A 10m tall tree will be the centrepiece.
Key landmarks will also be illuminated including the Citadel.
A Christmas market will be held between Wednesday, December 3 and Sunday, December 7, alongside the Victorian Market Hall which will hold a party on December 6.
A carol parade will be held on December 11 at 6.30pm followed by a hog roast in the Tithe Barn.
Mike Mitchelson, leader of Carlisle City Council, said: “We’re thrilled that Andrew can join us to celebrate our sparkling event.
“He’s one of our local heroes and as we’re encouraging people to sample what’s on offer on their doorsteps, it’s fitting he joins in our countdown to Christmas.”
Festive workshops will run at Tullie House up to the big event.
A grotto at Alex Boathouse, Talkin Tarn, will be held on December 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21.
