Staff and pupils at a primary school have unveiled a special memorial garden to remember its chairman of governors.

Cumwhinton Primary School, near Carlisle, created the garden in memory of Angela Fullerton, 63, who died last year after battling cancer.

Her husband Richard and daughter Jayne, attended the unveiling before the school finished for the summer term.

Children sang songs and gave some readings at a special dedication ceremony.

A new colourful horseshoe seating area has been created in the school garden along with a plaque that says: “Angie Fullerton Live Laugh Love in memory of a special lady.”

Mr Fullerton, of Cotehill, near Carlisle, said: “It really is a lovely place and Angela would have been proud that the school has done this in her memory.

“She worked as chair of governors for about 10 years. She enjoyed it and thought a lot of the school as our daughter used to go to school there.

“Angela was 63 when she died of bowel cancer. It spread quickly in the end.

“What they’ve done at the school is really nice.

“They held a race night at Foxy’s at Carlisle United in February to raise funds,” he added.

Mrs Fullerton’s daughter Jayne, 24, recently ran Race For Life in memory of her mother.

At the race she said: “I’m not a runner but I have done it every year since mum was diagnosed.

“Mum walked it with some friends last year and this year we decided to do the Pretty Muddy course and the 10k.”

Kath Mitchell, headteacher at Cumwhinton Primary School, said: “A huge thank you to all who attended and took part in the dedication ceremony in honour of our much missed friend, Angie Fullerton.

“Angie’s husband and daughter unveiled a beautiful plaque and listened to some wonderful singing and readings by the pupils of the school.

“We would like everyone to take a few moments to visit our garden when they’re next in school.”
