Infrastructure company Story Contracting is set to build a rail test centre in Carlisle.

The firm wants to lay four tracks at a depot in the Burgh Road Industrial Estate.

It has submitted plans to Carlisle City Council to build the facility on land which was originally earmarked as a storage area.

A document for councillors states: “The site would become a test and training area for rail employees.

“A total of four test tracks would be provided to enable tasks such as brake testing and machine handling to be carried out.”

If it gets the go-ahead the track would be used in normal working hours between 7.30am and 5.30pm.

The document adds: “There would no longer be any significant storage of cabins etc on site and therefore in terms of visual amenity the proposed use is lower impact than the use for which the land could be put to.”

Story Contracting has its headquarters at Burgh Road Industrial Estate and operates in civil engineering, construction and rail infrastructure.

The document states: “The site is well-related to the urban area of Carlisle on land, which is already heavily influenced by industrial uses, and has an approved scheme for employment use.

“The provision of the rail training tracks will allow for the reorganisation of the yard area, the continued expansion of Story Contracting and Story Rail and the increased provision of training and apprentice opportunities in this growing sector.”
