One of Carlisle best-known funeral directors John Tremble has died after losing his battle with cancer.
David Taylor, a former manager of the Cumbrian Indoor Bowls Club on Carlisle’s Viaduct Estate, has been among the first to pay tribute to Mr Tremble, a lifelong devotee of the sport.
He told how despite his illness, Mr Tremble, 72, remained upbeat during the last two and a half years.
“When I saw him a few weeks ago he was still hopeful that it could be beaten,” wrote Mr Taylor.
“Though he was not in the best of health John continued his support and interest in bowls in Cumbria right to the end. He was generous almost to a fault and sponsored numerous events both indoor and outdoor.”
Mr Tremble was a member of the county outdoor executive committee and president of that Association in 2009.
He was also president of the Cumbria Indoor Bowls Club and a trustee of the club.
Mr Taylor wrote: “His connection with the game of bowls had begun more than fifty years ago at the very strong Aspatria club and he learned the game from some fine players.
“It was an education which bore fruit for John as he became a useful player at county level with successes in county championships.”
Mr Taylor continued: “In business John had become a highly respected funeral director where he employed the same caring and sympathetic nature which were a feature of his everyday life and which earned him the respect of all those who knew him.
“It is a familiar saying that the recently deceased are sadly missed but in this instance it could not be truer and I am certain that a large number of people will be there to show that, and to pay there respects at his funeral.
“Bowlers throughout Cumbria will miss John and their sympathies are extended to all his family.”
During his career, Mr Tremble frequently spoke out about issues of importance to those involved in the trade of funeral directing.
