Water Polo’s Tom Grieve is hoping to be involved in more international competition this year.

Carlisle’s Grieve is already working towards his next challenge after being a part of the England team that won bronze at the EU Nations Cup.

Grieve, a former Stanwix School and Trinity School pupil who recently finished studying at Sheffield Hallam University, played a key role in the team’s success.

He scored three goals in the competition in Poland as England earned bronze after beating Portugal and Lithuania, while they drew with hosts Poland and lost to South Africa and Malta.

“There were quite a few big teams out there in terms of their size,” Grieve, who will turn 21 tomorrow, said.

“We are quite a young group. We are all students, basically.”

Meanwhile, England coach Tim Dunsbee added: “We’re very happy to have won a medal in this competition, it’s the start of a journey.”

On his own contribution to the team’s success, Grieve said: “It was nice.

“I wasn’t in the starting seven but I managed to score a few which is always nice.”

Grieve is now hoping to earn selection for the World Student Games in Chinese Taipei.

He told The Cumberland News : “That is the next goal in August. The team has not been selected yet but, hopefully, I will get in.”

And, in the meantime, the 20-year-old is training hard to ensure he is in shape if the call-up comes.

He said: “I’m doing about four pool sessions a week where I’m swimming and then playing water polo.

“I’m also doing four or five gym sessions, as well.”

Grieve, who began swimming at Carlisle Aquatics before taking up water polo, is keen to point out plenty of other keen water polo athletes have come out of the area.

He added: “The club has produced, not only myself, but also seven or eight other Junior internationals in water polo.”
