This weekend the Great Dun Fell Cycle Sportive will take place.

Starting in Appleby, the route heads through Eden Valley and skirts the edges of the Lake District.

At that stage, it arrives at the Great Dun Fell once regarded by The Guardian as “the greatest climb in England.”

The event is being run by Sport in Action, with more than 150 participants expected to enter.

Claire Allen, who has organised the event along with her husband Brian, said: “We are getting entries from all over the country – London, Yorkshire, Birmingham and Scotland. They are coming from far afield, especially with the finish up Great Dun Fell.

“Hopefully, by moving the timing to later in the year [the event took place in May in 2015 and it did not run last year], they can take advantage of the great views.

“We are hoping that the weather will be on our side.”

Both cycling and triathlon clubs in Cumbria are expected to be involved, as well as those from outside of the county on Sunday.

This year, the cyclists will also be timed as they go up the mountain.

With Kendal Calling Music Festival also due to take place this weekend, Claire added: “We have had to slightly change the course with Kendal Calling on this weekend.

“Everybody has kind of come together. They know we will look after the cyclists.”

While early entries closed on Wednesday, cyclists will still be able to enter the long course for £30 and the short course for £27.

Sport in Action, a Carlisle-based multi-sport events company, also organised the Ullswater Triathlon this month.

Claire said: “It was brilliant. We held the first Cumbria Club Championship [which was won by Tri-Lakeland Triathlon Club from Cockermouth]. It was a good atmosphere.”
