Secretary Alan Oliver hopes Silloth On Solway Golf Club can hold more high-profile events in the future after they held a British Universities and Colleges Sport golf event recently.

Golfers from universities across the UK descended on the Cumbrian course, on Station Road, Silloth, for the Northern Tournament.

Oliver, Silloth on Solway secretary, hopes they will be able to hold similar competitions in the future.

“In the end, around 30 people turned up. Universities that have golf teams right the way through the country were involved,” he said.

“We managed to hold one of the events here which was good.

“Hopefully, it will continue to grow.

“I would like to think we can hold another event at some time in the future and have more people down for it.”

Last weekend’s competition that was from Thursday to Saturday was actually won by two University of Exeter representatives in the men’s and women’s titles as Bradley Scott and Emily Toy won their respective titles.

Oliver added: “There were a few of them that came up. Obviously, there is a high structure to these fixtures.

“It was a good event for us to have.

“There were some good scores. There were some really, really good players.”

The Golf Guide, meanwhile, will hold a two-day event at Silloth next year – with the best score from either day winning a trip to Spain. It will take place from April 12-13 next year.

Other professional standard events are due to take place at 15 other locations next year, including St Andrews, Hexham and Lindrick, before the last event at Gleneagles.
