Young Border City ABC fighter Jack Turnbull will put his unbeaten record on the line in the English Schoolboy Championships tomorrow.

He will compete in the North West Regional Final in the 64kg category, where he will come up against unbeaten Hungary champion Ferdinand Sztojka in, what coach Ian Archibald is describing as Turnbull’s toughest bout to date.

Neither of the pair have a defeat on their records, but Sztojka, from Bolton Champions ABC, is the more experienced of the two, making Jack the underdog.

Jack had been due to fight Sztojka in an international competition between an England team and a Hungary select squad in February, but the Border City boxer was struck down with a virus the day before the fight and was unable to box.

“We’ve watched Ferdinand and know what to expect,” Archibald, who is one of the co-founders of the Carlisle club which is housed opposite the YMCA building just off Shaddongate, said. “He’s a strong forward fighter.

“We are looking forward to this bout as we believe Jack has the tools, technique and skill to cause an upset.”

Jack’s coach, Gordon Ullrich, has had Jack on a strict training regime and he has been taking part in sparring sessions in Scotland.

Jack, whose brother David also boxes for Border City ABC, put club before country as he faced Spencer McCrone on the Border City home show at the Crown & Mitre Hotel last month, despite being selected to attend an England Boxing talent squad in Rochdale.

Instead, the Carlisle club’s prospect boxed against his opponent from Spennymoor ABC, taking a unanimous win.

Meanwhile, preparations are well under way for Border City’s show on Sunday, May 14 at the Sands Centre, against a Scotland select squad.

Archibald added: “Hopefully, we will have 1,000 people from the city, coming to support the boxers and get behind them.”

Tickets are £10 and £20 for a ringside seat.
