Steve Borthwick has backed England captain Dylan Hartley to bounce back after being overlooked for the British and Irish Lions’ tour.

The squad for the Lions’ tour to New Zealand, which will start in June, was selected on Wednesday with head coach Warren Gatland being joined by the likes of Cumbrian Borthwick, Rob Howley and Andy Farrell for the squad announcement.

Hartley was the biggest-name omission from the 41-man party announced by Gatland, paving the way for the Northampton Saints hooker to take the helm for England against the Pumas, with Eddie Jones naming his squad on Thursday.

Jones previously stated he may look to rest some of his senior players if they miss out on Lions selection, but Carlisle-born Borthwick confirmed Hartley will be present for the two Tests.

“I know Dylan will be very disappointed not to be selected,” said Borthwick, speaking in his capacity as Lions forwards coach – a role he also performs for England.

“He’ll have an England tour to Argentina to work towards. He’ll undoubtedly be very, very disappointed, but what’s struck me is how resilient he is. He’s bounced back from a lot of things and there’s no doubt that’s exactly what he’ll do now.”

England, 2017 RBS 6 Nations champions, have supplied 16 of the 41 players bound for New Zealand in Lions colours this summer, leaving Jones with significant holes to plug.

But the Lions absentees and possible exclusion of senior players created the opportunity for Jones to name 15 uncapped players in his squad for the two-Test tour.

Jones has also made a number of enforced changes to the coaching set-up to compensate for Cumbrian Borthwick’s absence as he will be on the British and Irish Lions’ tour. Jones will take responsibility of the forwards, supported by scrum coach Neal Hatley.

Defence coach Paul Gustard adds the line-out and kick-off to his coaching remit and Glen Ella, who previously toured with England in Australia in 2016, will link-up with the squad in Argentina to assist Jones with the attack.

The former Wallaby will be supported by skills coach Rory Teague.
