Carlisle Airport delay: Don’t blame farmers

It was disappointing, but not entirely unexpected, to read the comments of Mr Andrew Tinkler as he attempted to shoulder the blame for his recent lay-offs squarely at the feet of the Irthington farmers who, as he claims, have delayed things (The Cumberland News, January 29).

Protect Newton Rigg campus from budget crisis

RORY Stewart does well to bring attention to the difficult situation regarding the University of Cumbria with its unbelievably huge deficit (The Cumberland News, January 22).I HAVE watched with interest the trials and tribulations of Carlisle Renaissance over the past few years. n WELL done Michael Boaden and Simon Osman for speaking out against Carlisle Renaissance. n THERE is a lot of talk in Carlisle at the moment of renaissance and the need for a new theatre. n ANOTHER edition of The Cumberland News goes to print with two more one-sided cases for a Carlisle theatre to be sited at the Lonsdale (January 22). n WHO dreamed up the latest proposals for Carlisle’s so-called ‘historic quarter’? n CYCLE Carlisle is responding to the report regarding the revised Carlisle historic core scheme (The Cumberland News, January 22).THE plan to build 30 new homes on a greenfield site in Old Etterby has the potential to swell the child population in Stanwix by a whole classroom, thus making any problem with education worse north of the river.IT IS encouraging to read that Carlisle’s bicycle shops are thriving due to an increased interest in cycling (The Cumberland News, January 15).MY HUSBAND has been a self-employed plasterer for many years and, for the first time, he has found himself without any work.AM I the only one concerned about the latest revenue-raising scheme in the county?MAY I, on behalf of the Carlisle Link of the charity Chernobyl Children’s Life Line, thank everyone involved in the recent visit of the 14 children and their interpreter for their kindness and generosity in making their trip very special. They went back with many happy memories.YOUR article on the Drumburgh chemical works (The Cumberland News, January 22) has added more history to my family tree.

In Cumbria we do not look after each other

RORY Stewart does well to bring attention to the difficult situation regarding the University of Cumbria with its unbelievably huge deficit (News & Star, January 22).MY HUSBAND has been a self-employed plasterer for many years and, for the first time, he has found himself without any work, which is incredible considering the floods in our area.AT MIDNIGHT on November 30, 2009 England as an independent sovereign nation ceased to exist; UK politicians, from Tory Edward Heath to Labour’s Gordon Brown, supported by the Lib-so-called Dems have assigned power to the EU which is a proxy for erstwhile enemies of the UK.

Potholed roads are never dealt with

It was inevitable that the deplorable state of the roads in and around Carlisle was featured in last week’s Cumberland News.

We still remember the excitement of stagecoach travel last century

Regarding the letter and photograph of a coach and horses on Kirkstone Pass (The Cumberland News, January 15). n I THINK I can explain how the stagecoach came to be on Kirkstone Pass in 1940.

Prioritise people not quango projects

The recent chaos, which has rendered the streets of Carlisle dangerous no-go areas and confined citizens to their homes, is a sad indictment of the city council.

Were horse-drawn coaches still in use 70 years ago?

WHILE sorting out family possessions after moving into a bungalow, I came across an old photograph which my parents took in 1940.

Country-dwellers need self-reliance

In response to your reader from East Curthwaite (Letters, December 31), I am perplexed as to why he or she feels such a sense of entitlement to a bespoke service from the council to guarantee access to fuel and food.

Pull out from European Union is what nation needs

THE dire state of British farming is mainly due to UK politicians selling out to the European Union. IF I hired a gardening company for eight hours a day for four years I would expect the Eden Project in my back garden. n IF YOU don’t ask, you don’t get. Well, we have asked, marched, petitioned, facebooked, radioed, TV’d, presented, had countless meetings and abseiled; yet still we don’t get our Lonsdale. HAVING read about several Nelson Thomlinson School sixth-formers objecting to having to attend a Christian carol service on the grounds that they were atheists, I have to say I am absolutely shocked and appalled at the school’s reaction and conduct (The Cumberland News, December 24).I WONDER whether some of your readers may be able to help in researching the life and work of the author Margaret Mary Leigh (1894 - 1973).

Best thing city of culture bid can do is fail

CARLISLE Diocese has decided that Rose Castle is no longer an appropriate residence for the Bishop of Carlisle and that its upkeep is too expensive.THOSE dear old Church Commissioners seem determined to rid themselves of our Rose Castle, but resistance is growing; the locals are rebelling.William Wallace couldn’t do it with his blue-faced clan,The air force packed it full of stuff to hide from the Luftwaffe,The commissioners seem quite determined to sell our history out,Hold fast in Stricklands Tower, this is our last redoubt,Wordsworth and Coleridge were delighted when they cameHAVING enjoyed a superb Christmas meal at a Carlisle restaurant, I suffered a severe attack of mental indigestion, when one of the owners handed me a booklet he had been asked to hand out by Carlisle Renaissance. n RENAISSANCE. A new beginning. Pardon? n I WAS recently asked by a councillor how the Save Our Lonsdale group stood regarding Carlisle’s City of Culture bid.I DO hope the University of Cumbria doesn’t teach courses in management or accounting.I WRITE in response to two reports on the farming page (The Cumberland News, December 4).IF SCOTLAND gets “independence” will it become a full “member state” of Europe, or immediately be assimilated into a “region” with northern Germany, Denmark etc.CUMBRIA is almost 35 years old we read (December 12).

People and weather co-exist on the planet

So, no flood barriers can guarantee that we shall be protected against future flooding – they are flood defences not flood prevention – in these times of increasingly unpredictable weather conditions (The Cumberland News, November 27).
