Hillsborough shame too late for Gerard
Last updated at 13:55, Monday, 14 January 2013
Gerard Baron was branded a thief and a drunken hooligan when he died 23 years ago at a football match – a victim of the Hillsborough stadium disaster.
His exemplary reputation as a good man, a family man, is now reinstated.
But it’s all too late to bring much comfort to the daughter who fought for nearly two and a half decades to clear his name.
Explosive revelations of one of this country’s most shameful, conspiratorial cover-ups has come much too late to offer satisfactory justice for any of the 96 men, women and children who died that day in Sheffield.
Too late to offer consolation to their loved ones.
Catherine, who lives in Botcherby, Carlisle, never shrank from her struggle to shine a light of truth into the web of lies which – from top down – protected the guilty from the consequences of their shocking actions.
“My father would have been very proud of what’s been achieved,” she says now – but adds: “I’m disgusted by the State. It broke mine and my family’s hearts.”
She knows now that lies will out in time. But too long a time has passed before dreadful secrets and appalling lies were broken, to the utter disgust of a nation.
