No return for weekly bin collections in Copeland

Weekly bin collections will not return to Copeland after the council refused a government grant.

A Copeland council spokesman confirmed the authority would not be applying for the Weekly Collection Support Scheme offered by the Government.

Councillor Brian Crawford said he could not believe the council had turned down the chance to bring weekly collections back.

He said: “As a pensioner we manage every two weeks but for families it’s not good enough. They should have consulted people rather than just decided against it.”

The council, which switched residents to a twin bin or blue bag scheme collected on alternate weeks last year, is looking to reorganise collections in areas with a twin bin scheme to a fortnightly service.

The authority is looking to get rid of one refuse collection team and lorry but a spokesman said no redundancies would be made. The shake-up comes as part of cost-cutting exercise which will see the council look to make total savings of £1.7m. An alternative plan would see collection rounds reviewed in a bid to cut fuel bills by around £12,000.

Councillor Reg Heathcote, said:“I don’t know if the grant would be adequate to fund weekly collections.”

The savings are set to be discussed at Copeland council’s executive committee meeting tomorrow.

Have your say

If you recycle then there is no need for weekly collections we used to recycle by taking all the plastic bottles paper etc to the relevant skips but now we have seperate bins and purple bags for the plastic bottles and tins, having said that not all people use them in the area there are still some who throw everything in the bin

Most people should not need weekly bin collections. Not everyone gets their recycling collected but some do and if not, if you are able bodied the area is full of recycling bins. I speak to a lot of people who say they will recycle when their council tax goes down. Nothing to do with it, it is everyone's duty, IF they can, to recycle. if you are not bothered then it is just sheer laziness.
