Cumbrian cricket club's undercover mission

A cricket club has got its next season covered.

The group at Lanercost has bought a new set of overlays. They lost several matches last year because of water logging and were determined not to let that happen again.

David Gosling, 63, a committee member at the club was delighted.

He said: “We can play a lot more games.

“Last year we lost a lot of them, 20 to 25 per cent, so this will reduce that.”

In an average season, the club’s various teams play about 100 games on their pitch. They expected to lose two to three games each year but 2012’s extremely wet summer saw that figure increase dramatically.

The three covers each measure 8m by 4m (around 26ft 3in x 13ft 1in) and have cost the club £5,000.

All of the money was raised through the club’s regular events on Friday evenings.

Mr Gosling said the club was extremely grateful for the support it has received in the community.

He said: “Lanercost is a cricket club but it is also the village pub as well.

“We have had a lot of success with this and that helps raise the money.”
