Brampton ‘power to the people’ proposal

Plans for Brampton to create its own power supply could be about to move forward.

Community group Brampton and Beyond has proposals to install an anaerobic digestion plant, which breaks down waste and turns it into fuel, on the Townfoot Industrial Estate.

The part of the group responsible for this idea – named Brampton and Beyond Energy (Babe) – is now inviting the public to have their say on the idea.

Tim Coombe, the Babe chairman, said: “We are holding a public meeting on Thursday, February 6 in the community centre to share our plans so far and hopefully in return receive positive feedback and support.”

The group believes a digester would be a good option for creating green energy in Brampton, saying it would be able to generate gas and electricity, providing both heat and power.

It has also claimed it would have “a relatively low visual and environmental impact”.

The digester would be part of plans by environmental group Sustainable Brampton to create a wide range of ways for the town to generate and save energy in the future.

Mr Coombe added: “Babe’s biggest challenge will be to secure sufficient capital to build the plant, but to achieve that we must first prove that the whole community stands firmly behind the project.

“Every member of Brampton should benefit – it could be a potential academic case study for pupils at William Howard School; residents could benefit from access to clean local heat and power; householders and businesses could potentially feed the digester with waste material; and entrepreneurs could create new micro-enterprises from the by-products of gas, heat and digestate (leftover material).

“Finally, any net profits would be invested in community organisations and projects.”

The meeting starts at 6.45pm on February 6. For more details call Mr Coombe on 016977 48833 or email
