People are being put at risk by potholes on a country road, a motorist claims.

Old Road, a route out of Longtown, is a popular route for walkers and their dogs.

However, it has several potholes, which drivers have to swerve to avoid.

One woman who uses the road is worried about what could happen.

Julie Walsh is the owner of Virginia Lodge nursing home, which sits on the road. She estimated that she needs to swerve four times while driving from Longtown to her business, which is about half a mile from Longtown’s town centre.

“Very often you have got dog walkers there and some of them just do not go over to the side of the road,” she said. “There is going to be an accident.”

Mrs Walsh added that the sides of the road were often very wet and muddy. She also said there were several large in the grass, some of which could be extremely deep.

The road was one of many discussed at Arthuret parish council’s last meeting.

The council is concerned at the state of roads in and around Longtown, which are used by many heavy goods vehicles.

“Surely the road surfaces need to be looked at,” said Margaret Gunson, a member of the council.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria County Council said the authority had been contacted about the condition of the road.

She added: “We are aware and our inspectors will have a look at it.

“They will inspect the scene and act on it.”

Shortly afterwards temporary repairs were carried out on the potholes, though further work will need to be done in the future.
