STUNNED paramedics returned to base to find thieves had stolen their hard-earned home entertainment system.

While Beckenham ambulance crews were out, helping to save lives, thieves helped themselves to their television, DVD player and cash, from lockers.

The paramedics had been attending an emergency call at about 1.30am when the thieves struck.

It is thought the raiders staked-out the station, waiting for the crew to leave.

Ambulance technician Glynis Philips, who has worked for the service for 15 years, said: "We are so upset something like this could have happened because of the nature of our work.

"I know people get burgled everyday, but it seems a bit nasty to choose us."

She added: "This equipment is there to give us some respite in the rare gaps between jobs.

"We work very hard and hardly get to use it. It's the only way we get to relieve the stress of our sometimes difficult jobs."

This sentiment is echoed by Beckenham station officer Kevin Knight, who said: "This theft is deplorable. For these staff to return to their station to discover it has been broken into was a great disruption. Staff are upset someone would steal from them as they are by no means well-paid and are dedicated to helping local residents."

Anyone who saw anything suspicious or has information about the theft on Monday, September 9, should call Orpington Police on 01689 891212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
