To meet in competition is good – but it’s as important for pupils to meet as partners
One of my more pleasurable roles as support officer for secondary schools in the Eden Valley is to find ways of making it easier for pupils of the five schools to get together.

Let’s hope that expected changes lead to more meaningful, valued education system
Recent information about a new curriculum, raising of the participation age and new Ofsted standards and changes to how schools will be measured have created a new flurry of thought and activity.

Constant change endangers the very quality in education we are striving for
All change - this is Crewe. These are familiar words I regularly recall from my childhood, and I could well be the only Crewe Alexandra supporter in Trinity School – or, indeed, in Carlisle.

If schools are so full of feral rioters – how do teachers maintain the calm that I see?
This summer England was burning – and not with seasonal sun – but literally, as a result of the rioting in many of our cities.

After examining the ‘facts’, we decided that the rush to academy status was not for us
Over the last academic year there have been a number of major initiatives that have been challenging to address and have required considerable thought, time and energy.

A year of privilege, topped by opportunity to offer advice to next wave of students
Students take their fair share of flack. Whether we’re branded tax-dodgers, dossers or idiots for throwing fire extinguishers, we’re never far away from a sceptical look or a cynical glance.

Whatever the school leaving age is, we hope students go with positive memories
I remember being told an anecdote about a final memory of school days. This was in Manchester way back in the 1970s and the fifth years (current year 11) were suddenly rounded up in the hall and told by the headteacher to “clear off”.

We can build on past achievements to rise to the challenges of the new White Paper
I ought to know better by now, but the passion which the topic of education creates in people still amazes me. At the CN Group Education and Learning Awards, I was moved by Helen Skelton’s account of her school life and commitment to positively promoting Cumbrian education.

It’s time to set aside the holiday reading and focus again on what the new school year has in store.

Outstanding teaching does not automatically lead to outstanding learning
The nine schools in our federation are all very individual in terms of their background but they are united in their desire to improve the teaching and learning within every school.
