The Duke of Kent officially opened a new £20 million rebuild of Trinity School before taking a tour and seeing art, science, English and maths lessons.

Earlier in the day His Royal Highness had also visited the Masonic Hall on Portland Square and Carlisle Castle.

Trinity head girl Olivia Hodgson and head boy Andrew Glendinning said they believed the new building would be beneficial for students and that they enjoyed meeting the duke.

Andrew said: “We were the first students to say hello to the duke. It was really good.”

Olivia added: “They’ve renovated everything in the new building and it’s brilliant.

“There are lots of things for students to use.”

His Royal Highness chatted to students and teachers as he was shown around the new facilities.

Headteacher Alan Mottershead said: “The visit was a real test but the duke was very impressed.”

His Royal Highness also had lunch with five Cumbrian scouts, who gave him a presentation on their visit this summer to Michigan in the USA.

The expedition involved scouts of 25 different nationalities joining together to promote friendship.

The Cumbrian scouts attending the trip were given a £1,000 grant towards their trip from the Provisional Grand Masters Charitable Fund. Thomas Singleton of Keswick Explorer Scouts said: “The duke was really interested with what we did.”
