Cumbria university chancellor urged to resign over views on gays

Some members of the University of Cumbria’s Students’ Union have called for the resignation of the institution’s chancellor.

They want John Sentamu, who is also Archbishop of York, to step down because of his views on same-sex marriages.

Dr Sentamu believes the Government should not push ahead with plans to legalise the unions.

He opposes gay marriage but supports civil partnerships because “friendships are good for everybody”.

His comments have angered some sections of the Students’ Union, especially its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Group (LGBT).

A motion calling for Dr Sentamu’s resignation as chancellor was put forward at a meeting by Jonathon Kirkham, LGBT Executive representative.

During a debate on the issue, however, there was also a view that the chancellor should be spoken to, but not resign.

Members decided to postpone a vote on the motion, so more members could gather information and make a more informed decision.

An emergency meeting will be held after the Easter holidays.

Dr Sentamu was unavailable for comment and the university declined to respond.
