Funerals for two former Carlisle mayors

Funerals of two former mayors of Carlisle will take place next week.

Hugh Little and Trudy Whalley, both long-serving councillors and stalwarts of the Labour Party, died in the past week.

Tributes have been paid to them and the difference each made to their communities.

Mr Little’s funeral will take place at St John The Baptist Church in Upperby at 1pm on Monday. He was city mayor from 1973 to 1974.

Mrs Whalley’s will be at the same church at 12.45pm on Tuesday, followed by committal at Carlisle Crematorium.

Both politicians had served the Upperby area.

Mr Little, an ex-leader of both Carlisle city and Cumbria county councils who was in his 80s, passed away at Eden Valley Hospice.

He began his political career in 1959 and retired in 1989.

Mr Little and his sister Mary Styth are the only brother and sister to have been mayors of Carlisle.

Mrs Whalley served on the city council for many years and was mayor in 1983/84. She was 81.

Her campaigning has been credited with ensuring Dixon’s Chimney remains standing.

Politicians and friends have paid tribute to both former councillors.

Stewart Young, a Labour councillor for Upperby, said Mr Little was consummate in his work.

“He was an outstanding politician – he really was a dominant on both the city, and subsequently the county council, but also regionally. He was respected and admired on all sides.”

On Mrs Whalley, survived by husband Geoff, Mr Young added: “She was embedded in the community – a fantastic councillor.”

Joe Hendry, Labour leader of the city council, said: “Both Hugh and Trudy were just good people.”
