Prince Charles will meet a number of members of the community when he makes an official visit to Wigton next week.

His Royal Highness will visit St Mary’s Church, Wigton Youth Station, the George Moore monument and tour the market hall on Tuesday as part of his visit to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the town’s market charter.

The charter dates back to 1262 when King Henry III granted Baron Walter de Wigton the right to hold a weekly market and annual fair in Wigton.

Prince Charles will be introduced to members of the Wigton Wiza group, along with young people involved with the youth station.

He will meet Mary Heslam, chairman of Wigton Wiza, as well as members Hannah Law, Jim Gilbertson, Margaret Hodgson, and Irene and Joe Graham.

Mrs Heslam said: “I am pleased that Wigton has recognised the work our club does for the community and further afield.

“It will be quite an adventure and I’m looking forward to it – it’s a privilege.

“I have great respect for the Queen and all the work she’s done and we are being honoured through Prince Charles.”

Hannah Law, 82, will be the oldest of the Wigton Wiza members to meet the Prince and she said: “I’m really delighted to have been asked and it was a big surprise.

“He does like Cumbria and supports us a lot which is much appreciated. I’m looking forward to it.”

The prince will meet young people involved in projects at the youth station including the organic allotment, the fishing group and the Funky Friday group, which is for young disabled people.

Youth worker Sam Massey said: “I think it’s a real honour that the town has recognised the young people in the community.

“It’s really exciting news and the kids who are going to be there can’t quite believe it at the moment.”
