Cumbrian nuclear flights claim is ‘scaremongering’

A claim that redevelopment of Carlisle Airport could lead to it transporting nuclear waste by air is “scaremongering”, says Stobart boss Andrew Tinkler.

Radiation Free Lakeland (RFL) made the claim the day after Carlisle City Council approved the controversial plans – for the fourth time.

Mr Tinkler said that there was now nothing to stop the £20m redevelopment from finally happening.

He believes work on the project – which includes a huge freight distribution depot on the site – could be underway within a few months.

But Marianne Birkby, from RFL cited the aviation website which lists the airport has having permission to transport radioactive freight.

She said: “There are plans for a new nuclear plant at Moorside. And if there ever is a deep geological disposal facility built in Cumbria they will need to move thousands of packages of radioactive waste around.

“It feels like the ducks are being lined up.”

She said the airport expansion had huge implications for the county, and her group wants it to be reconsidered for three reasons:

  • The airport appears to be registered to carry radioactive freight over a populated area;
  • The development would ensure a huge increase in air traffic near Sellafield, creating a risk of terrorist attacks;
  • And the county should not have been “held to ransom” by Stobarts’ “threat” to pull out.

Mr Tinker said the RFL claims were just “scaremongering”, and he confirmed that he knew of no plans to transport nuclear waste from the airport. He said: “There’s nothing in our plans about radioactive materials.

“There is now nothing to stop us starting work on the site. The people of Irthington have gained because there will now be restrictions on the flights from the airport.”

Who on earth are RFL? It seems a "pressure group" can be found to oppose anything these days. They are all the same, small, irrelevant but noisy.
