Cumbrian council could pay town crier a chicken a year

Plans for Brampton to have a town crier are moving on.
The idea was first brought up at the January meeting of the parish council. Now the group’s chairman has put forward a more detailed proposal.
David Moorat told members: “Between 1700 and 1912 Brampton indeed had its own town crier, known locally as the ‘Bellman’.
“Jimmy Walker, of Moatside, was the last known town crier in 1910 and the bell that he used is still somewhere in Brampton.”
Mr Moorat added that the position would be unpaid but that whoever did it could be give a capon (rooster) each year, which is common elsewhere.
The position would be advertised and open to both men and women.
Their duties would include attending important events in Brampton.
They would be provided with a uniform which craft group Salvage and Stitch have agreed, in principle, to create.
“Town criers in their resplendent red uniforms, with ceremonial bell command a striking picture and are highly valued as they help to promote tourism and add a touch of fun,” added Mr Moorat..”
Members approved of the proposal.
