Concerns over flats for elderly in Brampton

Concerns have been raised by community leaders over plans to build new flats for the elderly.

Brampton Parish Council members are worried about aspects of the proposals to redevelop a disused part of the Irthing Centre into extra care flats.

These will be designed for people who need medical support but want to live independently.

The application asks for 22 car parking spaces for the 38 proposed flats.

“There will be people working there and visitors as well,” said Gillian Hodgson, a parish council member. “It looks very good on paper but it is very cramped.”

Pat Skimming added: “They [the community trust] seem to be quite anti-car.”

However, Bob Allan, who is treasurer of the community trust, said: “We have taken advice from several other locations where this kind of accommodation has been provided and looked at the provision for car parking spaces for them.”

Mr Allan also pointed out that there are two car parks near the proposed site already, which he felt would be able to handle any overspill.

The application can be viewed online via planning.carlisle.gov.uk.
