There’s plenty to do this summer with events planned all over the county in both July and August.

Shows are hugely popular during the summer and this Saturday the annual Penrith Agricultural Show returns to Brougham Hall Farm. Thousands are expected to turn up to see the show jumping horses leaping over fences and groomed livestock strutting their stuff as well as the talent on display in the trade and rural craft tents.

Lowther Show will return to the castle grounds on the weekend of August 13 and 14. As well as watching drivers display their skill during the horse carriage driving trials, there’s a trail run, gundog championship, fishing island and Taste Cumbria Food and Beer Festival.

If you’re more interested in ceramics than cattle, Potfest in the Park is the place for you. Over 100 exhibitors who are passionate about working with clay are coming from all over Europe and beyond to show distinctive individual styles at Hutton in the Forest.

Other festivals on this summer include the Lake District Summer Music International Festival from Saturday, 30 July, to Friday, August 12; Dalston Festival Week from Sunday, August 7, to Saturday, August 13; Solfest from Friday August 26 to Sunday 29 and the Cumbria Vegan Festival on Saturday August 20.

The Carlisle Pageant will return to the city on Saturday August 20 for 10 days along with the international market. This free community event celebrates the city’s history and heritage.

As well as attending the above events, there’s always the opportunity to lace up a pair of trainers or walking boots and head to the hills. It’s free, good for your health and guaranteed to tire young children out!
