Thousands of people are expected to turn out for one of Cumbria's most popular carnivals tomorrow.

Organisers of Wigton Carnival are putting the finishing touches to this year's event - and are promising lots of family fun.

The main event is the carnival parade and will feature a number of colourful and creative floats which will make their way through the town centre.

Starting at 1pm from outside St Cuthbert's School, the procession will make its way up King Street to the monument, then to Nelson Thomlinson School's Lowmoor Road entrance before turning around and travelling to the Barton Laws playing fields.

As well as the procession there's a host of entertainment on the fields, including a dog show, Slater's Fun Fair, a display from the Sellafield police dogs and sporting challenges for all.

Paul Radcliffe, one of the organisers, said: "People can participate in any way they want, they can just turn up as a family and come and enjoy it.

"It will all just be good family entertainment, please come and enjoy it."

The management of the event has also been handed a huge boost with a last-minute donation of £1,000 from the Joyce Wilkinson Trust, administered by the Cumbria Community Foundation.

Ellen Clements, senior grants and donor services officer at the foundation, said: "The trust was created by Joyce Wilkinson who died in 2005. Joyce lived in Westward, near Wigton.

"She enjoyed rural life and did much in her local community.

"On her death, she left much of her estate to create an endowed charitable trust to support community activities in and around her home.

"The grant to Wigton Carnival Group has offset some of the costs in running the event and to provide entertainment, making it enjoyable for all the community."

* Grants are distributed from the fund twice a year. The deadline for applications to the next panel meeting is November 8.
