A Ukip councillor who controversially endorsed Workington’s Conservative candidate instead of his own party’s prospective MP has resigned as chairman of the local branch.

But David Wilson, who represents Aspatria on Allerdale council, has insisted he will not be leaving Ukip.

Mr Wilson, who was chairman of Ukip West Cumbria, caused ructions last week when he urged voters in Workington to choose Tory candidate Clark Vasey over his party’s George Kemp.

He was accused of “betrayal” by local members.

Mr Wilson said voting for Theresa May and the Conservatives was the only way to ensure Brexit happens.

But the local branch was quick to stress this was not their view, saying Mr Kemp was fighting hard to win the seat.

An angry Mr Kemp described his comments as “scandalous”, and called for Mr Wilson to be removed from the party.

Richard Mawdsley, who has been named interim chairman of Ukip West Cumbria, said an extraordinary general meeting was called over the weekend to discuss Mr Wilson’s comments.

George Kemp He said although personally invited, he declined to attend.

However Mr Wilson confirmed his resignation by email, stating: “I am still a member of Ukip and will remain so, but I resign as chair of the west cumbria branch with immediate effect.”

Mr Wilson has confirmed to the News & Star that this is the case, stressing he will not be leaving the party.

Mr Mawdsley added: “A vote, taken by members present, unanimously deplored Mr Wilson’s actions in his betrayal of Ukip’s candidates and branch members.”
