Top designer Wayne Hemingway will be in Cumbria next month.

Mr Hemingway is co-founder of HemingwayDesign, which has signed up to spearhead the creation of Carlisle's "garden village" - a project which could see 10,000 homes built.

The 30-year project - earmarked for the southern side of the city - is one of 14 such schemes being backed by the Government nationally and is part of an ambitious growth plan.

Carlisle's village will be known as St Cuthbert's and as well as the new homes, new schools and roads could also be created.

Mr Hemingway MBE, who co-founded fashion brand Red or Dead, will be giving a public lecture at the Carlisle's Old Fire Station on Thursday February 8, organised by the University of Cumbria, in partnership with Carlisle City Council.

His lecture, organisers say, will provide an insight into breathing new life into old concepts and how to cut through the ordinary and expected with powerful and visionary design.

HemingwayDesign is supporting creative landscape and urban design consultancy Gillespies in the first stages of the masterplanning process for Carlisle's proposed new development St Cuthbert's Garden Village to the south of the city.

In advance of delivering his lecture in the evening, Wayne will be attending a stakeholders' consultation event in support of this undertaking to bring 10,000 new houses and associated infrastructure to the area.

Roddy Hunter, director of the university's Institute of the Arts, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Carlisle City Council in bringing Wayne Hemingway back to the city.

"He is an inspirational speaker and will provide our students, industry leaders, arts organisations and the wider general public with an excellent opportunity to learn from his experience and how we can continue to enhance the economic, social and cultural offer through art and culture."

This event starts at 6pm. To reserve a place, email eventsioa@cumbria.ac.uk or call Karen Jones on 01228 400301.
