Three retailers in Carlisle badly affected by flooding have confirmed they plan to reopen in the city centre.

The DFS furniture store, Wickes home improvement store and the Turf Tavern restaurant, all situated near Hardwicke Circus, were deluged with flood water last month bringing their business operations to a complete halt.

However, despite clean-up bills running into the thousands, all three national firms have confirmed to The Cumberland News that they will be reopening their city stores.

Both Wickes and a spokesman for the Turf Tavern, which is owned by Hungry Horse, were unable to confirm when this year doors would reopen to customers but reiterated they were committed to Carlisle.

While Claire Rushton, the head of communications at DFS, said: “We’re aiming to be up and running before the end of February. In the meantime if anyone requires help they can visit a neighbouring store, which can be located through our store finder on the website, or of course speak to a sales consultant in websales. We appreciate the hard times the people of Carlisle are having and will pull out all the stops to help.”

A spokeswoman for Hungry Horse said: “We are working hard to get the Turf Tavern reopened later this year once a thorough refurbishment of the building has been carried out. During this time, our pub team are working at some of our other nearby pubs.”

A Wickes spokesman told The Cumberland News : “While there is a not a confirmed date for the Carlisle store to reopen, we are committed to reopening the store as soon as the necessary work is complete. In the meantime, the Wickes Carlisle store will continue to trade from the store car park.”
