Television star Richard Madeley has thrown his support behind fundraisers taking part in Carlisle’s Memory Walk this weekend.

The broadcaster, who worked as a reporter for BBC Cumbria early in his career, is urging people to “walk for a world without dementia” on Saturday.

About 1,000 walkers are expected to descend on the city’s Bitts Park to make their way along a 6km riverside route, while others will also be completing a shorter 1.5km walk.

It will be officially opened by Beth Furneaux, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for health and social care services.

Mr Madeley, whose mum suffered from dementia, is the official voice of the Memory Walk and has recorded the charity’s radio advert as well as announcements to be broadcast on the day of the event.

The walk will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, which funds research into the cause, care, cure and prevention of all types of dementia.

The charity also champions the rights of people living with dementia and the millions of people who care for them.

It has also committed to spending at least £100m on research over the next decade.

Mr Madeley said: “I’m delighted to be supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk.

“My mum had dementia so I’m fully aware of the difficulties families face living with the condition.

“The event is an opportunity for people of all ages to come together to celebrate someone special or walk in memory of a loved one.

“That’s why I want to urge the people of Cumbria to walk for a world without dementia.”

The walk is open to people of all ages and abilities, from grandparents to grandchildren, while pets are also welcome to take part on the day.

Both walks – the 6km and 1.5km routes – will start in Bitts Park at 11am on Saturday. Anyone who wishes to take part must register in advance.
