A north Cumbrian nursing home has been named Care Home of the Year.

Silloth Nursing and Residential Care Home was one of seven homes placed on a shortlist to win the award, which was handed out by the National Gold Standards Framework Centre (GSF).

The award is given based on the opinions of an expert panel who determine which home offers the best end of life care. The panel, who include national independent experts from the care homes sector, assessed all seven finalists against 20 standards - with Silloth scoring full marks in all categories.

The report compiled by the judges said: “The shortlisted homes clearly represented ‘the best of the best’.

“It was uplifting to see such dedidcation to high-quality end of life care.”

Linda Faulder, senior nurse at Silloth, said providing their 38 residents with a home away from home was central to everything she and all 70 staff members strived for.

She added: “Care is delivered how they want it, where they want it. We have given them control of their care.

“We talk to our residents about their wishes right from when they arrive. This includes everything from the meals they like, family visiting times and how they want their room. This is their home not a last chance hotel and we want all of our residents to have a good life right up until the end of their life.”
