Crowning of the king and queen of a north Cumbria village is set to take place as its summer carnival returns.

Preparations are underway in Castle Carrock, near Brampton, ahead of the annual event, which takes place on the village green on Saturday, July 1.

The event will kick-off with a fancy dress parade around the village involving local school children before the crowns are bestowed on this year's royalty.

Jane Helliwell, one of the carnival organisers, said: “People in Castle Carrock know how to enjoy themselves and we are looking forward to a cracking day.

"There is usually a strong turnout for the carnival and we hope that will be the case once again this year.

"Fingers crossed the weather is kind to us but we will have fun and make the most of it regardless.

“We are also looking forward to the ceilidh and hope everyone will come along and let their hair down. It should be great fun.

"Everyone is welcome to come along to the day and to our evening celebrations. The more the merrier.”

Traditional stalls including hook-a-duck, a coconut-shy and a penalty shoot-out will be on offer alongside a bouncy castle. There will also be races and a tug-of-war.

The Watson Institute will be serving homemade cakes and teas and coffees.

Local ukulele band The D’Ukes will provide live music before ceilidh bend Thrice Brewed will lead a country dance from 7.30pm.

The Duke of Cumberland pub will be offering a barbecue between 4pm and 6pm.

Tickets for the ceilidh are £5 for adults. Children go free.
