Cumbria's top detective is heading up the investigation after saline bags were found to have been tampered with at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary.

Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Slattery, Cumbria police’s head of crime, has set up an incident room – and a team of detectives are working on the case.

Bosses at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust called in the police after infirmary staff discovered damage to an undisclosed number of saline bags.

The trust said as far as it is aware none of the damaged bags reached patients.

It has upped security. Patients can phone 01228 814247 if they have concerns.
